Life Begins at the Cross

And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Exodus 12:1-2

What was life before the killing of the passover lamb for the Israelites? It was one of bondage to their Egyptian taskmaster. They couldn't reckon those years when they were in bondage as life, it was misery. Same is true for us before we met Jesus Christ at the cross, at that time, we were in hard bondage to sin, our taskmaster, ruled by satan.

In the estimation of God, a person's life is really of no account until he encounters the One in whom is life (John 1:4), who shed His precious blood on the cross to make it possible for those who are dead in trespasses and sins to find life in Him. Up until this time, man is dead in trespasses and sins. We were all under the condemnation of divine justice, and there was nothing in that state of life to be celebrated, even though we celebrate it.

He that believeth not the Son shall not see life. John 3:36

If this is true, and it is true, then, we must conclude that whatever we saw before coming to Christ, and called life, was not life at all. We may seek something else to call it. In the economy of God, outside of Christ, there is no life. What we had was death. "He that hath the Son hath life" (1 John 5:12), conversely, he that does not have Christ does not have life. This is the verdict of God about life, and He is best suited to give such a verdict. The question then is, if God looks at you right now, will He see life? In the judgment of God, life begins at the cross.
