An Adulterous and Sinful Generation

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Mark 8:38

The terms that Jesus used in describing this generation are hard and frightening. He calls it adulterous and sinful. To be adulterous is sinful enough, but Jesus added to their adulterous status, sinfulness. Jesus was speaking of a generation that will make for itself a god that suits their values; a god that will do what they want him to do, and will condone their sinfulness. Such is the generation that Jesus was speaking about. Are we by any chance not in such a generation as Jesus spoke about? As we observe the growing departure from what is ordinarily known as truth today, one cannot but conclude that this is the generation that Jesus spoke of.

Such is a generation that will deny, and be ashamed of Jesus Christ. But what will make someone deny Jesus Christ or be ashamed of Him? As sin grows, everything good will begin to be spoken of as evil, and identifying with the cause of truth will then be adjudged to be a shameful thing. At such a time, evil will be celebrated, and those who choose to side with good will be ridiculed, bullied, and scoffed at. The places that will be mostly affected at such a time will be schools and the workplace. The bullying will become institutionalized to the point that there will be no justice for those seeking to live their lives by the truth.

For example, at the present time, some nations have already placed a ban on prayers in schools and other public places; it is gradually becoming an offence to air your views about a subject that is contrary to a lie. You are labeled as hateful when you openly speak against a conduct that is immoral and ungodly. This adulterous and sinful generation is on a slippery slope, headed for destruction. The only recourse for those who hold to the truth at a time like this is to hold firmly to it, and be ready to suffer on account of the truth. Do you see why Jesus said that anyone who saves his life shall lose it, and those who lose their lives for His sake shall gain it? Those who save their lives by joining with an adulterous and sinful generation will join them on the slippery slope, and end up with them in their ruin.
