The world is shrinking, and relationship is shrinking in depth and
meaning. With this shrink in relationship, also comes an expansion of
self-devotion, and this growth is astronomical. What danger does this
portend for society? As relationship shrinks with the growth of
self-devotion, it's counterparts, isolation and loneliness also come.
And with these on board, depression is imminent.
The irony of the situation is that the world is today more connected than ever, yet, this is the most isolated and lonely generation ever. With the pursuit of self-realization and self this, and self that, the old time one-on-one bond and support system that healthy relationships provided is gradually eroding. We are in a dire situation as a race, and if nothing is done to restore the role of real family and friends in fabric of society, we will be heading for disaster as a race.
In the center of this crisis is the social media. Social media in itself is not the problem, but the use to which it is put can be damaging, if not moderated. With the internet, distant, impersonal relationships are cultivated that are not able to provide the much needed comfort that the old faithful hug gives. So, we will use the internet, but we will not allow it to replace real people who can personally impact your life. We all need a hand over the shoulder in times when words will not suffice.
