The Law of the Spirit and the Law of Sin

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Romans 8:2

Notice that the Spirit does not set free from sin, it sets free from the law of sin and death. This is because the Spirit is not given to free us from sin, only Jesus does. The Spirit frees us from the law of sin. Naturally, the question then will be, what is the law of sin? The law of sin is the outcome of depending on the keeping of the law to please God. Once this happens, we are cut off from the power of the Holy Spirit, and we cannot fail to do those things which we know that we should not do. This failure is because the Holy Spirit is not sent to validate what we do with the law, but what we do with what Christ did on the cross.

The outcome of relying on the flesh to please God is the law of sin and death. The law of sin is as powerful as the law of gravity, once the object is released, it hits the ground. The law is sin works in the same way, once you rely on the strength of the flesh (your efforts  without the  Holy Spirit) to do the will of God, you cannot fail to reproduce that behaviour that you don't want to do. That's why it is called a law. On the other hand, once you set your faith on the cross and what Christ did on it, rather than on keeping the law in order to please God, Holy Spirit comes in with His power to validate your faith in Christ, this way, He enables you to live according to the will of God.
