Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John 1:29
In Christ's death, God put together all past sins of the human race, and judged them in Him. From Adam to Christ, sinners lived up their lives unto old age, and it appeared as though the pronounced penalty of sin was a divine lip service. Apart from a few mass judgments like the flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, all other sins passed unpunished, at least in this present age.
In the fullness of time, God manifested His righteousness (revealed in the gospel) by bringing upon Jesus Christ the punishment due to all unpunished sin of the ages. When we look at the cross, this is what we see: the judgment of the whole world on display in the Son of God. Think of this, on the cross, God placed upon Jesus Christ the punishment that every sinner since Adam deserved. Considering that every sin was a dishonour to God, every single sinful act of men was punished in Christ, and by it, God received the honour due to Him. Now that we know this, what manner of life ought we to live in honour of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? This is a question that is daily before each of us.
The question, why was it necessary for God to become a man has its answer, in part, on the weight of the sin of the whole world. It is impossible for a being who is only human to bear this weight, only in a God-Man is this possible, and Christ fulfilled this requirement.
