When the Holy Spirit Leads

Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Acts 6:3

In this passage, the apostles did not assume that they would be of good reputation simply because the were filled with the Holy Ghost. In enumerating the qualities of those to be appointed for the office of deacons, they included the following: such had to have good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. By this, they implied the possibility of being full of the Spirit and not having good reputation. However, this is an abberation, because having the Holy Spirit equips us to have good reputation. But this doesn't happen without our cooperation with the Holy Spirit.

It is one thing to be filled with the Holy Spirit, it is entirely another thing to be led by Him. The former is the work of Christ, but the latter is the responsibility of the believer. The bible says that Jesus, being full of the Holy Spirit, He was led into the wilderness. Christ being led by the Holy Spirit implied that He cooperated with the Holy Spirit, making Himself available. The same is true for us, to be led by the Holy Spirit will require our cooperation and availability. One thing that the Holy Spirit does not do is to force anyone to follow Him, but as many as yield themselves to Him, He gives direction. And when His direction is followed, it will inevitably result in good reputation.
