I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5
Here,
Jesus seems to rule out the possibility of being in Him and not bear
much fruit. When He said, "He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much
fruit," He meant that it would be absolutely impossible to be united
with Him and not bear much fruit. This is so because being the True
Vine, He is responsible for supplying the branches with the nourishment
that they require to be able to bear much fruit.
When
someone says that he is abiding in Jesus Christ and doesn't bear much
fruit, it will imply that Jesus is failing in His duty of supplying
nourishment to him for bearing much fruit. And this is absolutely
inconceivable. But the True Vine can only nourish the branch that is
abiding in the Vine. This is a choice left to the branch, to abide or
not to abide. To abide in the Vine also means abiding in the word of
God. It is by the word that the branch is nourished and bears much
fruit.
