What Makes the Difference

One day a young soldier went to visit the tomb of a valiant solder and the sword of a famous warrior was placed in his hand. The soldier lifted it saying, “Is this really his sword? Why, there is nothing in it more than mine!” The old clerk exclaimed, “You see only the sword; you should have seen the hand that grasped it!”

Everything that a man of virtue used to rise to greatness is common to all, but the difference always lies in the man in whose hands it is. Have you listened to a man teach from the Bible, and you wonder if his Bible is not the same as the one that you have? The difference is not in the Bible from which he taught, but from the heart from which he approached the same Bible. Nothing great comes from a tool if it is not in the hands of a man who has mastered the implement. So too with the Holy Spirit, He is the same Spirit that was in Christ and the apostles, the difference in what He can bring about lies in how much of each of us is made available to Him in time and devotion.
