The Bread of Life

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. John 6:35

By bread of life, Jesus meant that, unlike the Bread which the fathers ate in the wilderness and are dead because that bread had no capacity to give life, it could only nourish the body for a short time, but the Bread of life gives spiritual life and sustains it for all eternity. It is to this bread that all of mankind is invited to partake in. In John 4:15, Jesus met a Samaritan woman at the well and offered her the living water of which anyone who drinks will not thirst again.

Over and over again, Jesus made His audience to understand that whatever He gives has an everlasting impact, but sadly, most people only come to Him for the bread that perishes with use. When He said that He was the Bread of life, Jesus was simply saying that He is the giver of life to those who are dead in sin and trespasses, and also the sustainer of the life of the soul.

Until one takes of this Bread of life, his desire to know God is vain because the life that this Bread of life gives is the very life of God by which the Son of man, Jesus Christ, lived His human life. Coming to Jesus Christ in faith results in the infusion of God's life into the being of the believer, and thereby, making living for God possible. This is the futility of religion, which is men trying in their own ways to serve God. No one can come to God apart from first receiving the Bread of life, and by it receive the life of God that makes coming to God and serving Him possible.
