Judges 16:21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his
eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass;
and he did grind in the prison house.
The bible records that they put out the eyes of Samson. He
lost his vision. This doesn't only mean the loss of a physical sight, it
also means that he lost his God-given purpose. It is true that sin can
have damaging physical consequence on us, yet, it does have more far
reaching effects. It impacts the entire life of a person. Sin's effect
has no boundaries, it spreads like cancer. The only solution to its
spread is faith in Jesus Christ.
How low sin can bring a man! Think of a man like Samson who
was born to subjugate the Philistines, now becoming their object of
ridicule and fun. A man whose presence once sent chills down the spine
of his enemies, now is bound, not by the superior powers of the enemy,
but because of his lack of moral strength, now he lies bound and
subjugated.
Someone said that if we are not killing sin, sin will be
killing us. How true! Have you tried to come into the mind of Samson as
he replayed the events leading up to his captivity? I am sure that one
dominant theme will be regrets, and maybe, self-bashing. All the "if I
had..." Samson may be behind us, yet, the lessons to be learned from his
life are fresh. Never take the grace of God for granted. It is never at
your whims and caprices. Samson learnt this lesson by experience, but
we can learn from his mistake.
