Patience and Faith in the Face of Persecution

"So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:" 2 Thessalonians 1:4

In this verse, the apostle Paul shows us the appropriate attitude of the believer in the time of persecution. It is patience and faith. Patience and faith are needed to be able to endure the hardships that persecution brings with it. This, to the credit of the Thessalonians, was their attitude toward persecution and tribulation.

"Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:" 2 Thessalonians 1:5

Those who endure persecution and tribulation are counted worthy of the kingdom of God for which sake they have suffered. In Acts 14:22, the apostle Paul stated that all who will enter the kingdom will suffer persecution. Since it is not possible to endure persecution and tribulation without faith and patience, all who are confronted with persecution must be strong in faith, and longsuffering. Persecution is one thing that we cannot do away by prayer, through prayer, however, we can receive strength to endure to the end.

As we observe the events happening in the world today, we cannot fail to notice the rising tide of persecution coming against the church in different forms. What this means is that, like no other time, we, as believers must seek the Lord in prayer for strength to withstand the fierce assault of the enemy, and to glorify God in it.
