In this series of Bible prophecy summary, we will be looking at world
powers through the ages and how they have impacted Judah (Israel) and
Jerusalem. These are nations that are relevant to bible prophecy. To
understand what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do in
the future, is to find out how each super power, in every age, dealt
with Israel, or is dealing with Israel, or will deal with Israel as a
nation, and Jerusalem, as a city. Israel is the barometer by which the
calendar of God can be viewed.
Beginning with Babylon, which is the first world power that dealt with nation Israel and the city of Jerusalem, we can begin to see a prototype of the last day's dealings of God of the nations and Israel and Jerusalem.
Remember the project Babel? It was a type of globalisation, which is beginning to take the centre stage in world affairs. From Babel on, the quest of nations became the attempt to become world powers that would rule over the earth. In this quest, Babylon became one of the first. One may ask, but the Assyrians were a world power of its time, why are we not including them in the list of world powers that impacted Israel? First, let's remember that Israel had been divided after the reign of king Solomon into the ten kingdoms, known as Israel, and Judah. Judah was more directly connected with bible prophecy because to it belonged the promise of the Messiah who was to come from the lineage of David. The Assyrians didn't impact on Judah and Jerusalem in the way that Babylon did. The Assyrians took the ten kingdoms into captivity and sent them to exile.
Babylon was the first world power whose action impacted Judah and Jerusalem, destroying the city, temple, sending the entire nation on exile to Babylon. Tomorrow, we will look at subsequent world powers that dealt with Israel (Judah) and Jerusalem, and how their dealings affected bible prophecy.
