What is the Truth?

John 8:32; 14:6; 17:17; 1:17;

For ages, man has been in search of the answer to what is the truth. Philosophers are not agreeable regarding what it is, and the debate continues. It was in this backdrop of what truth is that Pilate asked Jesus, "What is truth"?

Truth, like light, is revealing. When you seek the truth, you seek light to illuminate your darkness. The first thing that truth reveals is twofold, who we are, and our greatest need. If we truly come to the truth, we will know that we are sinners, and in need of a Saviour. Until one knows this, he will remain in his darkness. When Pilate asked Jesus, what is the truth, he didn't wait to hear from Jesus what truth is. Had he waited, Jesus would have told him what the truth is, and that may have set him on the path of seeking salvation, because according to Jesus, "You shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free".

When the truth reveals to us what we are, it doesn't leave us in despair, it brings us to hope of knowing the Saviour. We only become hopeless when we reject the truth about who we are, sinners, and our need for a Saviour. No wonder Jesus said, you shall know that truth, and the truth will make you free.

In John 18:37, Jesus said to Pilate,
"...To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." Clearly, He associates the mission of His coming into the world with making the truth known. In John 1:17, we are told that grace and truth came through Jesus Christ, affirming what He told Pilate. In the the light of this, it will be proper to say that anyone desirous of the truth will have to turn to Jesus, because truth came from Him, He came into this world to bear witness to the truth.

When the light that truth reveals is truly known to anyone, he will naturally desire grace. This is so because the first thing that truth reveals is who you are, sinners condemned by the law of God, then, followed by the solution to who you are as sinners: grace. After you have met the Saviour, truth also shines in your heart, teaching you the walk of grace, which leads up to Christlikeness.

Finally, we will say that when truth is known, then do we really know who we are, and the path to true happiness, which is in knowing the Saviour. So, may I ask, do you know the truth? This is the greatest question that all should address, because it holds the key to eternal peace.
