Money matters to the preaching of the gospel, yet, money is not the
matter of the preaching of the gospel. A lot of wrong happens when this
truth is not taken into account. Increasingly, the world perceives of
the church as a business centre, and you cannot exactly fault them
because of the preponderance of fund raising that takes place in the
church.
My wife and I were
travelling in a minibus, and there was a young 'pastor' who was speaking
with someone on the phone. It was obvious, from the conversation, that
the person on the other end was a pastor. This was the tone of the
conversation: "I hope that you are preparing well for the programme
because this will be your opportunity to get the car that you are
trusting God for." In other words, the sole aim for the programme was to
get a car, not to save the sinner. Now, assuming there were
non-Christians in that bus, and they heard that conversation, what do
you think will be their reaction? "They are all the same, looking for
money in the name Christ." And will you blame them for thinking so? It
is sad that this has become the image of the church in the eyes of the
world, and it is not a true representation of the majesty and dignity of
Jesus Christ. He did not come into the world to make money, but to die
on the cross to save sinner.
It is true that the church needs money for its evangelistic works, yet, it must not translate into making raising money its main stay of the church. It is a fraud when what should be a means to an end becomes the end in itself. Every true lover of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ must stand up to resist this money abuse that is perpetrated by fraudsters who have made their way into the holy church of Jesus Christ.
