The Gift of Prophecy

"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" 1 Corinthians 12:7, 10

Today, we will be looking at the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the form of prophecy, and we will focus our study on one aspect of what prophecy does: bringing comfort to the distressed. According to the dictionary meaning, to comfort, is to make someone less unhappy, worried or upset. In 2 Corinthians 2:7, Apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthians, associated comfort with helping someone not to be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

"So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and COMFORT him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow." 2 Corinthians 2:7.

This is an example of what prophecy does, it brings comfort from God to the distressed so that he is not swallowed up in his misery. One thing that the word of prophecy does is that it confirms God's love to the person in distress.

Satan often takes advantage of the absence of the true word of prophecy in the church and creates despair in the heart of the distressed person. It is saddening that there is a growing number of people giving up on life or committing suicide in the church when God has put among us such a wonderful gift as prophecy. A few days ago, it was reported that a worship leader in a church hung himself.

What, I ask, if the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the form of prophecy was in operation in the last church service that he attended, could the situation have been different? I believe that it would have been, for are the manifestations of the Holy Spirit not given for the profit of all? Since they are, their operation may have profited this worship leader, bringing him comfort and saved him from being swallowed up with overmuch sorrow as was the case.
