How We Know that We Are in Him

1 John 2:5-6 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

1 John 3:6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Christ cannot be separated from grace, to be in Christ is to be in grace. No one who is in Him lives in flagrant sin. Grace, like the law, calls for obedience, but unlike the law, grace imputes a nature in us that loves to obey God. When a person who claims to be in Christ does not take delight in obeying God, it is testimony to the fact that he lacks the new nature that grace imputes. According to the apostle John, obedience to the word of God is how we know that we are in Him. Christ didn't contemplate the kind of faith in Him that does not lead up to a delight in obedience. Any such faith cannot be the product of grace.

When people debate on how much sin God is willing to forgive in the life of a believer, it makes it seem as if grace is designed to accommodate sin. Absolutely not! Grace is designed to curb sin, not nurse it.
