Is Jesus Merely an Agent of Creation?

In the Jehovah's Witness bible, John 1:1 is rendered as, “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was a god”. By this, they deny the equality of the Word with God. According to them, the word was only an agent, created by God to create all things. But this position of the Jehovah's witnesses becomes problematic when we come to verse 3. "All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made."

According to this verse, everything in the universe was made by the Word, who the Jehovah's witnesses say is a god that was created to create all things. But we are told that without the Word was not anything made that was made. Now, if the Word was made, as the Jehovah's witnesses claim, then, the Word created Himself, because everything that was created, including Himself, if He was created, was created by the Word.

This is the absurdity of twisting the scriptures and taking them out of their simple context, and making them say whatever you want them to say. But this is not the only scripture that the Jehovah's witnesses do violence to. In their attempt at getting the bible to say what they want it to say, they misrepresent such passages as Genesis 1:26, which says, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." According to them, the "let us" in this passage is God speaking to angels. Nothing can be more untrue as this claim. First, nowhere in the bible are angles shown as co-creators with God. Over and over again, they are shown as messengers of God, and never as creators along with God, as the Jehovah's witnesses claim. Angels had no role in creation whatsoever.

The book of Job gives a vivid account of the act of God in the creation of the earth, and the place of angels regarding that creation. Job 38:4 "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" Did you notice that the angels, referred to as the morning stars, were mere spectators, as God created? They had absolutely no part in any aspect of creation.

To claim that they did, is to bring them to equality with the Creator, and this is not only sacrilegious, it is also an insult to God, the Creator, who made all things. Angels are content being messengers of God, and when one of them, Lucifer, sought to be like God, he was judged and cast down from heaven.

So, the true interpretation of the "let us" of Genesis 1:26 is the plurality of the Godhead. The major problem facing those who are troubled by the doctrine of the deity of Jesus Christ is that they have failed to understand the true concept of God: that God is not a person, but a Being consisting of three persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul alluded to this when he wrote in 1 Corinthians 8:4, 6, "...there is none other God but one... But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him." So, there is but one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is the concept of God revealed in the bible. when all truths available in the scriptures are properly understood, it cannot be said that Jesus was created to create.
