You may have heard someone say that they want to be their best for God,
and maybe, you have even desired the same. But sadly, the best that
anyone can be for God is not good enough for God. We all have been
touched by sin as fallen creatures, and nothing that sin has touched is
good enough for God. So, you may then ask, what is the best that anyone
can be for God? Great question! The answer to this question is found in
grace.
In Genesis, when Adam and Eve sinned against God, the first thing that they did was to provide a covering for their nakedness with fig leaves, but their effort was not enough to satisfy God, therefore, He killed an animal, and with its skin, made a dress for them. This was the first act of grace towards the human race: God provided a suitable cover for fallen man. Nothing done in the energy of the flesh can ever satisfy God.
When we examine the first sacrifice offered by humans to God, the same truth is revealed. Cain offered a sacrifice from the product of his toil upon the earth, but Abel offered an animal whose life was in its blood, and it was accepted by God. Through the ages, man has tried to be his best for God without success, relying on his energy. However, in the fullness of time, God sent His only begotten Son into the world and offered Him as a sacrifice for our sin. Not only did Jesus die, the Holy Spirit was also sent, who will live in, and help all who come to Jesus Christ in faith. When we depend on the Holy Spirit, every work that we do through His help ceases to be credited to our merit, but are works done in the energy of the Spirit. This is the best that anyone can be for God.
Do you want to be the best for God? Then, you must learn to depend on the Holy Spirit, and follow Him in whatever way that He directs you. This is the work of faith that pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). Without this, it is impossible to please God. Whatever we do apart from the Holy Spirit is not good enough for God.
