The Drowning Man

Ephesians 2:8-9

A drowning man cannot help himself, he needs help. In the same way, the sinner, drowning in the sea of sin, cannot save himself, he needs a Saviour to save him from drowning in the sea of sin. Think of a proud drowning man who refuses to accept the fact of his incapacity, and then refuses the help offered him by a lifeguard. You and I know what the end will be for that proud sinking man: he will perish in His pride.

The same is true for the sinner who refuses the offer of salvation that God offers him in Christ, thinking that he can save himself by his own good works. The rejection of God's offer of salvation by the sinner is the out working of pride in his heart, and the end is that he will perish in his pride. Unfortunately, this is the story of many unsaved people, they trust in their own goodness for salvation. This is nothing but pride, and it is the bane of sinners. The apostle Paul said in Ephesians 2:8 that we are saved by grace through faith, not of works lest anyone should boast. The sinner wants to boast in his self attainment of salvation, making God irrelevant to the course of his being saved. He wants to be credited for his salvation.
