God's Everlasting Covenant

God never spared Israel when she sinned, but even at that, He never intended by His punishment to remove them from being a nation because of His covenant with their fathers. In Jeremiah 46:28, He said, ‘Fear thou not O Jacob my servant, saith the Lord: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure: yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.’

This is a truth that lots of people fail to take account of when they talk of how God deals with sin in His people. One thing must be stated clearly from the onset, God will punish sin wherever He finds it. For example, He punished sin when He found it carried by His Son on the cross, even though it was not on His own account, but ours. Now when He punishes sin in the Christian He takes account that Christ has borne the penalty for their sins. Yet, sin is not spared, it is punished, but the Christian is not condemned because his foundation is rooted in Christ.

But the unsaved who has rejected the saving grace of Christ is left to face the wrath of God for his personal sins. God will not make a complete end of His people as He would those of the world who reject His offer of salvation in Christ Jesus, but He will not overlook the sin of His people. He will punish sin because He is a holy God.
