"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4
We all are living in a broken world, and often are challenged by forces we may not be able to subdue in our strength. At such times, the surest way of coming through is to fall back on something superior to what is challenging us. For the person who believes in Jesus Christ, his resort will be to go to the word of God and find out what He has said about the present challenge.
God's word is the only unbroken thing in this world, and it rules over all things. When the devil accosted Jesus in the wilderness, God's word was His resort, and the same is His counsel to all His people who are challenged by the devil. Jesus does not envisage the possibility of those who believe in Him living apart from His word. So He counsels that man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. God's word can be trusted because it has innate ability to bring about what it says, when it is believed.
